A Place of Birds edition by Jane Jackson Romance eBooks
Quaker restrictions for women are difficult on an independent thinking woman like Susanna. The first half of the book reveals her intelligence and willfulness. Her father is a leader in the Quaker community and her actions reflect upon him and his family. She has a business acumen that exceeds that of her beloved brother, heir to the family shipping business. Her sister is of a serious and obedient nature and marries a flawed man unworthy of her. Susanna has volunteered her services to a widowed doctor in charge of a local seaman's hospital where she daily converses and gives comfort to the ailing men without benefit of a chaperon. Her aunts understand how isolated she feels and help her escape the Quaker community. Her romantic feelings leave her conflicted as a result of one rejection and one declaration of love. There are unusual circumstances involving her aunts, a sea-voyage to China, and an existing wife.
Too much going on with too many people involved. The last part of the story takes place in a political China striving to regain trade control. The book dragged in places and confused me in others. For me the author could have given more depth to characters and trimmed what to me was filler. The resolution was unconventional as well. There were times when I'm wondering why we even needed to go where the author took us. It was umm-okay, I finished it, but felt it left many unresolved issues.

A Place of Birds edition by Jane Jackson Romance eBooks Reviews
Very engaging. The main character, Susanna, was well developed. I was rooting for her and couldn't put the book down. The ending could have been better, but still satisfying.
I got about 75% through this book but couldn't finish it. The story goes against everything I believe in, being adulterous. And worse than that is the fact that the adultry is viewed in a sympathetic light. (Its not like Anna Karenina where the adultery has bad consequences). The reader here is expected to understand and cheer them along as they conquer all odds. No. This left a very bad taste in my mouth.
I'm a huge fan of Jane Jackson. I'm just glad this wasn't my first book by her because it would really put me off her other stuff. Jane can (and HAS) done better. Her other books have been clean reads. This one seemed as though it was trying to buck every convention of its time.
A huge disappointment.
